Te Ao Māori

In Room 8 we value the bicultural heritage of Aotearoa/New Zealand. We learn basic te reo Māori and practise Māori tikanga on a daily basis. This page is here to provide a place for parents and whānau to come and see what we have been learning and how it fits in to what we do everyday. Of course you can give it a go too!

We will be beginning what we call 'Te Kupu Mahi o te Wiki' in week 2. This translates as 'The Command/Instruction of the Week'. So far we have started to listen for and respond to the following:

E noho kei runga i te whāriki - Sit on the mat.

Rārangi atu - Line up over there.

Whakarongo mai, titiro mai - Look at me and listen.

Māori pronunciation is not as hard as it looks! We will be learning some really easy strategies to help us read and speak te reo Māori with confidence. I'm sure your tamariki would love to share with you their new learning at home throughout the year.

What do the following words mean?

Pōkatu: Winton
Rere: fly
Mahi Kainga: Homework
Pāngarau: Maths
Pānui: Reading
Tuhituhi: Writing
